Josef Kaβs Sandbox is an installation and a performance that welcomes you back to childhood memories. During the opening performance the artist plays in the sandbox together with children from a vintage film shot nearly a hundred years ago.
Sandbox was performed on the opening of the My Childhood exhibition in Annantalo, Helsinki, on the 13th of October, 2021.
My Childhood is a multidisciplinary and multicultural exhibition for children, young people and families. It gathers together stories of childhood created by transcultural artists living and working in Finland. Within the exhibition childhood is connected with culture, identity and diversity. The meaningful and experiential stories find varied forms within the selected artworks.
International performance, visual and sound artist Josef Ka blends richly varied influences β everything from Butoh dance to cinematic theory β with her decades of nomadic world travel to create bold, highly personal site-specific art.
Josef Kaβs themes range from investigating the place of the human body in contemporary reality to exploring the inner body as a representative system of our human and post human kind.
Her artistic practice often actively invites the audience inside a sort of private reverie, making it is a deeply participatory one; she actively engages with both her audiences and with a wide diversity of other experimental artists.
In addition to her own work, Josef Ka curates a regular series of events and exhibitions at her Helsinki underground space β Sauna Gallery β and teaches classes on the theory and practice of performance art. She is also the inventor of the WORST THEATRE and her yogic training system, KA-YOGA.
