THE 3RD COLOR // FESTIVAL OF PERFORMANCE ART: WORD AND BODY // ST. PETERSBURG MAY 2019

THE THIRD COLOR //PERFORMANCE BY JOSEF KA// VIDEO BY KONSTANTIN SELIVERSTOV

A performance THE THIRD COLOR is based on the concept of Mikhail Matyushin, one of the world’s leading color theorists, who believed that when colors interact, they create a new, transient essence. This process changes the very meaning of color. The idea also relates to expanding perception, like a ‘third eye.’

The performance, an homage to Matyushin, took place at his mansion, where the festival was held.

Mikhail Matyushin (1861 Nizhny Novgorod, Russia – 1934, Leningrad, USSR), painter, composer, and art theorist. Matyushin is known for his pioneering work on color theory and the concept of “expanded vision”. He was associated with the Russian avant-garde movement.

Matyushin’s theory proposed that colors interact dynamically and that their combinations create new, fluid, and transient entities. He believed in training perception to grasp these subtleties, aiming for a heightened state of awareness, akin to developing a “third eye” for color and spatial relationships. His ideas were closely tied to synesthetic experiences, where different senses interconnect.
