Prayer for Performance Art is a new project by Josef Ka, a permanent performance artist of the Quantum Critic program.

“Prayer for Performance Art” a performance by Josef Ka, which took place on October 29, 2023, as part of the annual international program “Quantum Critic,” curated by the Myymälä2 Gallery in Helsinki. This performance marked the beginning of a series dedicated to exploring the state of contemporary performance art. Performance art, from its inception, has been one of the most open-minded and bold mediums, yet often remains underpaid and undervalued. Through the creation of a unique ritual PRAYER FOR PERFORMANCE ART, the performance involved the artist’s body representing the essence of performance art itself, resulting in a site-specific interactive experience.

International performance, visual and sound artist Josef Ka’s blends richly varied influences – everything from Butoh dance to cinematic theory – with her decades of nomadic world travel to create bold, highly personal site-specific art. Josef Ka’s themes range from investigating the place of the human body in contemporary reality to exploring the inner body as a representative system of our human and post human kind. 

Her artistic practice often actively invites the audience inside a sort of private reverie, making it a deeply participatory one; she actively engages with both her audiences and with a wide diversity of other experimental artists. 

In addition to her own work, Josef Ka curates a regular series of events and exhibitions at her Helsinki underground space – Sauna Gallery – and teaches classes on the theory and practice of performance art. She is also the inventor of the WORST THEATRE and her personal training system, KA-YOGA.
